Why convert PDF/A back to PDF

When a reader such as Acrobat sees a PDF/A, it opens it read-only, with a bar saying the file complies with an archiving standard. That protects compliance: editing would break it. If you need to edit the document, the declaration has to go.

How to do it

  1. Drop the PDF/A on the box

    The declared version is read.

  2. The declaration is removed

Only the compliance statement in the metadata goes. Text, images, pages and links stay exactly as they were.

  3. Download the PDF

Readers now treat it as a normal PDF and let you edit it.

If the file is not a PDF/A, there is nothing to remove and we tell you so. To check first, use the PDF/A validator.
