Convert PDF to PDF/A
PDF/A is the version of PDF built to last: everything needed to display the document, starting with the fonts, is stored inside the file. Here you can convert a PDF to PDF/A right in your browser, pick the profile the recipient asks for, and check the result before you download it.
The document is never uploaded: conversion and validation run on your own device. New to the format? Start with what PDF/A is, or check an existing file with the PDF/A validator.
How it works
- Choose the file
Drop it on the box above or click to pick it. Up to 60 MB and 300 pages.
- Say where it is going
PDF/A-2b for general use; PDF/A-1b when the recipient asks for the first version of the standard, such as USPTO patent filings.
- Check the result and download
The converted file is validated rule by rule on your device. If it fails, you do not get it: better to find out now than after you file it.
Your file never leaves your device
Most online converters ask you to upload the document to their servers. Contracts, court filings and statements are exactly the files people convert to PDF/A, and exactly the ones worth keeping to yourself. Here the file is read, converted and validated on your computer or phone: there is no upload step, no copy left anywhere and no account.
You can check it yourself: open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab and convert a file. You will not see the document leave.

Frequently asked questions
Is the PDF/A converter free?
Converting and validating are free, with no limit and no sign-up: you see the result and a preview of the converted file. Downloading the PDF/A is paid, from $2.49 for a single document. See Pricing.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The PDF is read, converted and validated inside your browser. No part of the document leaves your device.
Which PDF/A version do I need?
The one the recipient asks for. If the instructions only say «PDF/A», PDF/A-2b is fine. If they say PDF/A-1 or PDF/A-1b, or accept only PDF up to version 1.6, choose PDF/A-1b.
Will my digital signature still be valid?
No. Converting a signed PDF changes the file and breaks the signature; the converter warns you first. Convert first, then sign.
